1. "CATFISH FACTS & TRIVIA":
QUESTIONS: In the olden days, pictures showed octopi encapsulating a shell. It
was assumed that the octo was prying the shell apart, and eventually, the clam,
or whatever, just gave up, or tired. We now know this is incorrect. How/what is
the octo doing and how does it feed upon the shelled cousins ?
Question compliments of Jim Hensel -- Tonawanda, NY thanks Jim!

each week----trivia answers should only be sent to Debby at dive@discoverydiving.com
Trivia Questions for possible inclusion into upcoming Newsletters should be sent

QUESTION: In the Phylum Mollusca are included clams, oysters, snails, mussels,
octopus and squid. All have soft bodies, and all except the octo and squid have
exterior shells. Why then are the last two included in this grouping?
Answers:
The Phylum Mollusca, totalling about 130,000 species, is a diverse group of
soft-bodied, unsegmented animals. They can be found in marine, freshwater, or
terrestrial environments, and they include such animals as snails, slugs, clams,
oysters, squids, and octopii. They are found in a wide range of sizes, from
microscopic to as large as the Giant Squid. Most molluscs share certain
characteristics, such as a muscular foot which may be modified into tentacles, a
mantle that encloses gills or lungs, a tongue-like feeding organ with teeth
capable of boring into food, and some may have some form of shell, either
internal or external, made of calcium carbonate.
A calcium shell present in most molluscs: some molluscs have greatly reduced
their shells, e.g., squid; while others have completely lost it, e.g., slugs,
nudibranchs, and octopus
Among other reasons because they share a unique characteristic called a radula
and have their body surrounded by a structure called a mantle,
All Mollusks are classified on the basis of the "Foot". The foot is a muscular
organ that in most cases is used for locomotion in some form.
It is best seen in snails, the part of the body on which they crawl on is the
foot.
There are 3 major classes of mollusks all determined by the foot.
Snails and slugs are gastropods meaning stomach footed of which it is easy to
see by their crawling on their stomachs. Clams oysters and other bivalves
(having 2 shells) are pelesapods (sp) meaning hatched footed. This type of hatch
foot is best seen in clams with a tongue like organ that takes the shape of a
hatch as it protrudes out of the shell to pull the clam into the sand or mud of
the sea bottom. Squids and octopus are cephalopods meaning head footed. The foot
comes off the head of the animal and divides into the tentacles that we are
familiar with.
The ultimate reason why the octopus and squid are included in the Phylum
Mollusca is that they share a common ancestor with the rest of the members of
this phylum. The key characteristics derived from this ancestor are a large
muscular foot (think conch chowder!), a soft body mass that rides on top of this
foot, and a thick fold of tissue called the mantle that typically secretes the
shell. This basic body plan is best seen in the snails, but is obviously
rearranged in the clam and oyster (where the body and shell are squished
sideways). The octopus and squid belong to the Class Cephalopoda (literally
meaning "head-foot"), along with the chambered nautilus and the cuttlefish. This
group has the typical body plan modified by having the foot replaced by the
arms, as well as showing a progressive loss of the shell. The mantle thus
becomes the external body wall. We all know that the nautilus has a complete
spiral shell that has individual compartments that can be filled with gas to
provide buoyancy, just like our divers BCD. The shell is small, chambered, and
internal in the cuttlefish. In the squid, the "shell" is that long rod we call
the pen. Octopus has no shell at all. Along the way, the squid and octopus
evolved a fairly large brain that allows them to learn simple tasks and solve
problems. The octopus also has an eye that functions pretty much like ours.
In reference to the quiz the answer is in three parts. First, both squids and
octopus have a radula like the mollusks. It is used to stuff food through the
throat. Second, squids and octopus have a mantle cavity. Third, is the presence
of a shell. The squids is internal and is called a 'pen' which helps to
streamline its body. In octopus, scientist still consider the 'beak' as a
remnant of it's shell.
All mollusks have a soft body (their name is derived from the Latin word mollus,
meaning "soft"), which is generally protected by a hard, calcium-
containing shell. In some forms however, the shell has been lost in the course
of evolution, as in slugs and octopuses, or greatly reduced in size and
internalized, as in squids.
The mollusks constitute one of the largest phyla of animals, both in numbers of
living species (at least 47,000, and perhaps many more) and in numbers of
individuals.
A significant characteristic of mollusks is their possession of a coelom, a
fluid-filled cavity that develops within the mesoderm. The coelom not only
functions as a hydrostatic skeleton but also provides space within which the
internal organs can be suspended by the mesenteries.

4. Giant Shark
Shark catch in Yarmouth Nova Scotia
Wouldn't want to meet this bad boy face to face in the water This Mako was
hooked in the mouth, only fought slightly for 15 minutes, came up along side of
the boat to have a look, long enough for one of the crew to put a rope around
its tail !!! That's when the s**t hit the fan!!
The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water
at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS. The boat was taking on water, the Shark
would jump completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before
the Shark actually drowned.
He weighed in at 1035 LBS
Someone sent me this email, how would you like to run into him one day while on
a dive?
Check our web site for the pictures!!!
5. Manatee Spotted
Ref. the manatee spotted in Newport River, we had one in the canal (Kings
Corner) behind our house in Pine Knoll Shores around 7:30am one morning a couple
of weeks ago. Both my wife and I observed it for about 30 minutes.
Don't know if it was Chessie on it's way back to Florida from Chesapeake Bay
with the rest of the snow birds, but it was definitely a manatee.
Last Monday night while shrimping a friend of our saw a manatee in the New Port
River. It was definitely a Manatee he was not narced and not drunk.
Anyone else seen him?

Dale Hansen one of our mates (in his real life he is a pilot for United) has
been working for some time on compiling stills and video of our wrecks. He has
also been developing our Open Water Scuba Class, which we think is the most
thorough around, into a power point presentation. All the disks are still works
in progress and will be augmented as he gets more information and/or images but
we feel they are ready for consumption as they are now!
All the wreck titles have short videos and pictures of the wreck. If you have
ever been on a dive where Dale was taking pictures you might find yourself on
some of the shots! The disks also have a text introduction to the wreck or
topic. On the wreck disks it will give you the history of that wreck and on the
shark disk it gives you some background on Sand Tiger sharks.
Each disk also has a synopsis of Discovery Diving, a section on dolphin, a
section depicting local marine life, a section depicting local corals and plants
and a section on barracuda. The main topic of the disk runs for 15-20 minutes
and the DVD'S or CD'S are $9.95 each + tax + shipping.
